We spent most of yesterday afternoon out at the local U-pick berry farms. With strawberries for 80 cents a pound and blueberries for a mere $1.25 a pound..it's an amazing thing to be able to go out and gather these little jewels ourselves. We picked a full flat of strawberries which worked out to about $5.40 and we picked over 16 POUNDS of bluberries ($20 bucks). I remember when I used to purchase a *pint* of blueberries in the grocery stores of Houston for over $5....only to get them home and realize the bottom half was completely moldy. Ewww. I spent the evening rotating the cleaning/freezing/bagging routine.....and fondly looked forward to that snowy day this coming winter when I'll be sitting in my SUV, taking a break from snowboarding, and mawing down on a freshly baked blueberry muffin. Mmmmmmmmm.
In other news, I just got off the phone with one of my best friends from high school who is visiting her parents for the 4th of July weekend (they live about 15 miles from me). She's been in Las Vegas since our college years and she's finally tired of the big city life and is looking for work here.
Wow. This coming-back-home-to-Oregon-thing is becoming a trend! :)
Wow - I can't believe berries are that cheap in Oregon! I picked 12 quarts
of strawberries and it cost me $30... And blueberries aren't ready here
(eastern-ish Canada) until mid-August. sigh. I guess I'll have to wait.
And I know that they aren't $1.25 a pound, more like $4 or $5!
